New one-stop centre for vulnerable women in Reading PDF Print E-mail
Family support charity Parents And Children Together, has won funding to set up a centre in Reading for women, especially those at risk of offending.

PACT successfully bid for the Ministry of Justice funding to provide extra and enhanced community support for women offenders, women at risk of receiving a custodial sentence and women at risk of offending, all of whom are assessed as not a danger to the public.

Early in 2010, PACT will be opening a “one stop shop” for women, operating from a centre in South Street, Reading.

The project aims to help women turn away from crime and turn their lives around. The work will be supported by partnerships that include probation, prison, police, health, CAB, Berkshire Womens Aid and many others with common aims of reducing crime and re-offending as well as social inclusion.

PACT’s Housing and Community Director Barry Wildsmith said: “We are delighted The Ministry of Justice has recognised PACT as having the creativity and skills that will be important in making this work as success.

“We are working with over 15 partners from both the voluntary and statutory sector to develop and deliver this project.

“We are delighted that this will increase the amount and type of support available to vulnerable women in the Reading area.”

CARE sector professionals have hailed a conference held by charity Parents And Children Together as “One of the best training days I have ever been to”.

The event, Trauma, Empathy and Common Sense, was held in Oxford on 15 October 2009 and aimed to empower parents and professionals with strategies for coping with children who have suffered traumatic experiences.

Keynote speaker, psychotherapist Babette Rothchild flew in from the US to deliver an “inspirational” and “engaging” session about the impact of working with damaged children.Image

PACT Chief Executive Jan Fishwick said: “Feedback from those who attended our conference has been incredibly positive.

“Delegates have told us they found the sessions thought-provoking and went away with practical coping methods and a reminder to self-reflect.”

She said that plans were already underway for PACT’s next conference in 2011, its centenary year.

New Era For PACT PDF Print E-mail
ImageA charity that strives to enhance family life is this week unveiling a new image and a wider vision for the future.

Parents and Children Together, which was founded in 1911, is re-launching with a new “building blocks” logo and plans to expand its work building and strengthening families.

The charity acts as an adoption and fostering agency, responds to the needs of children, young people and their parents through one-to-one support and group drop-in sessions and educates learners in the care sector.

PACT Chief Executive Jan Fishwick said the new logo symbolised what the charity aimed to do every day.  She said: “It is about what we do and who we serve. The building blocks are a pictorial representation of how we build and strengthen families.  In the past we have concentrated on improving the life chances of young children but we now want to branch out and extend our support to young people.  PACT has been working with young people of all ages in varying degrees for many years but now we want to consolidate what we know and apply it to our future vision.”
