For Hilary and Peter, love was never just about two people – it was a celebration of connection, compassion and the power of giving back. When they got married in May, the couple made a generous choice: instead of traditional wedding gifts, they asked their guests to donate to PACT, a charity close to both their hearts.
Hilary explained: “Our message to our weddings guests was quite simple: please don’t buy us presents… If you wish to celebrate our wedding, our chosen charity is PACT.”
After 23 years working in social care, Hilary feels especially connected to PACT’s Alana House community project, which uses a holistic and trauma-informed approach to support and empower women facing multiple disadvantages. Women are offered information and support in line with the nine pathways, including accommodation, domestic abuse and education, training and employment.
“Emotional support and empowerment were at the heart of my work,” she said. “It’s one of the most important steps in helping women turn their lives around.”
Peter shares that same spirit of advocacy. Through his involvement with the Freemasons he has mentored young men who grew up in homes affected by domestic abuse. “Our combined experiences led us to support PACT,” Hilary said. “Domestic violence is a widespread issue that affects people, families and communities – not just here in the UK, but all over the world. Raising awareness is vital for fostering understanding, support and action.”
Guests wholeheartedly embraced the couple’s wish. The donations came pouring in, raising vital funds to support PACT’s work. “We were delighted and deeply grateful – and thankful we didn’t end up with 20 air fryers!” Hilary joked. “Instead of unwrapping presents, we received an email with the total amount raised. That was the best feeling ever. Brilliant – just brilliant!
“Life has given us lots of opportunities over our 73 years. Knowing the funds raised will help women and families affected by domestic violence – now that’s truly worth celebrating. It’s a wonderful way to mark our marriage.”
PACT Chief Executive Natausha van Vliet shared her appreciation: “We are extremely grateful to Hilary and Peter for their generosity and for raising awareness of PACT’s work. Their support helps us empower women, children and parents to embrace a brighter future.”
