For over a year, Georgina has generously volunteered her time to run the weekly sewing group at Alana House, creating a welcoming space where women can connect, learn new skills, and grow in confidence.
Georgina said: “I’ve always loved sewing and after running a few group sessions for friends realised that it was an unpressurised way for people to chat and make things. A friend suggested I volunteer at Alana House and I’ve been doing it for about a year now.
“We make all sorts of things – lavender bags, bean bags from sofa covers, cushions for VW vans, clothes, amazing wall hangings, bags and hats. Women come saying they can’t sew but find that with a bit of encouragement they are off and taking things home to sew. I love the humour and the support within the group and the realisation that they can make something. We go by the mantra that there are no mistakes in sewing, just different ways of getting there!”
One of the group’s most recent projects is especially close to our hearts. They’ve been creating an eye-catching banner for PACT supporters to take to this year’s London Marathon, helping Team PACT runners spot their cheer squad on the day. It’s a wonderful way for a little part of Alana House to be there in London, cheering our runners on! 💜
The impact of the group is best seen through the experiences of those who attend. One member of the sewing group shared: “I love Alana House. It’s a very supportive and friendly environment. I love the sewing group because it’s helped me to come back online after a period of stress to connect to people and learn the skill of sewing to help boost my confidence. Before I couldn’t leave the house!”
Georgie, Alana House Administrator, added: “We are incredibly grateful to Georgina for the time, care, and energy she brings every single week. The sewing group is a lifeline for many women, and the feedback we receive speaks volumes about the positive impact she makes.”
Well done for all the amazing work you’re doing, Georgina. We are delighted to celebrate you as our Supporter of the Month!
